Crete,
general information:
Crete is the biggest isle of Greece and the fifth isle of the all the
Mediterranean; it comes from a volcano and it is considered as an important
watershed between Europe and Africa. It has a surface of 8.300 km with a
popolation of 500.000 inhabitants, who embrace mostly the orthodox faith; Crete
has also more than 1000 km of beautiful coasts, 3 airports: Iraklion, Chanià and
Sitia and 2 important harbour:
Iraklion and
Chanià.
Crete is furnished with structures and services suitable for the tourism and
there, it is possible to find hotel, apartments and villas which meet our
costumers’ requirements.
The isle has a great variety of landscapes that can take your breath away; it
possedes some montains over 2000 mt,a lot of caves and gorges unique in the
world, several tracts of tropical see, some monasteryes and amazing archaeologic
finds of the Minoan civilization.
Crete preserves ancient traditions that we can find in the folklore of the
entertainments of the cities; the history has still several mitological
references as for example the Ida montain, that is considered Zeus’ birthplace
and Matala’s beach , where Menelao was shipwrecked going back home from the war
of Troy.
Knossos possedes one of the most important archaeologic place of the isle:
infact, it preserves some finds of the royal palace built by Daedalus for King
Minos; that is a
palace with 1500 rooms, that are partly visible
and painted. It is supported by black and red columns. To Knossos is linked the
legend of the labyrinth, of the Minotaur and the fly of Icarus.
Other important archaeological places are situated in Festo, Cortina and Malia.
The main cities of Crete are Heraklion and
Chanià; they still show the traces of the
influence of the ancient commercial trades and the relations between Crete and
Venice.
Special landscapes of Crete are:
- Lassithi, where it is still possible to see hundreds of windmill
- The beach of Vai, that is shaden by tropical palms and where are produced
small bananas
- Samaria gorges, that have an extention of 8 km and a deepness of 300 mt
and. They have their source in Omalos and they descend until the see
- The fauna, full of wild animals, allow you to see the famous Gipeto, on
the way of the extinction
- The ancient othodox monasteryes
It is advisable also to see some other isles of Crete as for example,
Sinalonga, Gramvousa, Gavdos,Gavdopoula, Paximadia, Hrisi giving particular
attention to Gavdos, that is one of the most amazing isle in the world.
All the isles of Crete are beautiful and places like Loutro, Frangocastello,
Aghia Roumell, Elafonissi, Preveli, Grandvousa offers us unforgettable images.
Crete can also tenders spettacular flowering of orange-groves and a
mediterranean bush that will be an indelible memory of the isle.
It is possible to find hotel, apartments and villas both in the inner and in the
outward of the isle.
Crete can be reached through airplains and ferryes.
